Populism Rises—Can Trump Make a Comeback?

In times of challenge, we can draw inspiration from the greats — and there was no one quite like Rush Limbaugh. He was a steadfast believer in the Stockdale Principle: confronting brutal realities while never losing hope. This duality is the ultimate key to triumph, studied by leaders and experts alike. So, how does last night’s political landscape measure up to this principle?

- Historical perspective shows that midterm losses are not unprecedented for transformative presidents.
- The so-called "blue wave" was more of a Republican coalition collapse than a Democratic victory.
- Voter discontent stemmed from economic struggles and dissatisfaction with foreign policy priorities.

As a student of history, Rush would remind us that such political upheavals are not without precedent. Consider FDR, the most transformative president of the 20th century, who lost 81 House seats in the 1938 midterms, echoing similar losses by Truman, Eisenhower, Clinton, and Obama. Even Reagan experienced setbacks in the '86 midterms without tarnishing his legacy historical perspective. Thus, historical perspective is crucial: transformative presidencies can withstand these storms.

Last night's events are clear: it wasn’t a blue tsunami but rather a collapse of the Republican coalition, particularly the Trump coalition. Voters didn't rally for the Democrats; they voted against Republicans. Texas, a longstanding red state, flipped entirely blue, defying a 32-year trend. This seismic shift, driven by Republican voters staying home, reflects a reckoning long in the making Texas flipping blue.

Why did Republicans sit out this election? Many liken it to President Trump's "Iraq moment," reminiscent of Bush's 2006 midterm losses during an unpopular war. Energy shocks and cost of living concerns paralleled those times, exacerbated by the current Iran conflict economic struggles. Mary Margaret Olohan from the Daily Wire tweeted that the economic anxiety tied to the Iran war was a decisive factor in the Republican defeat. Exit polls revealed 74 percent of voters viewed the Iran war as a major voting influence, with 62 percent of those voters preferring Democrats.

Affordability concerns also played a significant role. Trump's approval ratings followed gas prices like clockwork. When prices rose, his approval dipped, and vice versa. Our good friend Rich Baris foresaw this disaster, noting the split between election modelers and pollsters. The Republicans were punished for failing to deliver on economic promises.

Three-quarters of voters described the economy as "rough," with many blaming the governing party for broken promises and an expensive foreign conflict. This mirrors Britain's recent election, where dissatisfaction with the ruling party, not an embrace of the left, shaped the outcome.

But there's a silver lining: populism triumphed. Voters didn't suddenly become Democrats; they rejected Republican governance. This means the populist electorate can swing back to the right as easily as it swung left. Historically, Democrats tend to overreach, offering Republicans a chance to reclaim their populist message.

This isn't a permanent realignment; it's a testament to the enduring power of populism. If President Trump and the Republicans return to their populist roots, especially after repudiating the Iran war, a massive comeback in 2028 is likely. History shows resilient presidencies bounce back from midterm setbacks, and no one is more resilient than President Trump.
