The most dangerous political movements rarely announce their destructive intentions outright. Instead, they cloak their agendas in promises that sound too good to resist. Free healthcare, free college, affordable housing, economic equality, and justice for the oppressed — these are the seductive promises of socialism. But the real question is not whether these promises sound appealing. The real question is: What kind of power must the government wield to even attempt fulfilling such promises, and what happens when that power becomes unchallengeable?
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) was born in 1982 from the merger of the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee, which aimed to push the Democratic Party to the far-left, and the New American Movement, a revolutionary socialist-feminist organization. This union is key to understanding today's DSA, as it pledged allegiance to Third World national-liberation struggles and identified American corporate capitalism as the linchpin of world imperialism. By dismantling American economic and social power abroad, they believed they could advance socialism.
Socialism and Third Worldism are interconnected ideologies, interpreting inequality through exploitation systems. Third Worldism shifts the socialist struggle from class conflict within a nation to a global battle between wealthy capitalist cores, like the United States and Western Europe, and the impoverished periphery. Socialism provides Third Worldism with an explanation for poverty, a political strategy for combatting exploitation, and a revolutionary coalition. This coalition replaces Marx's bourgeois-proletariat system with the West as the global bourgeoisie and the Third World as the global proletariat.
From its inception, the DSA has embraced this radical Third Worldist ideology, identifying Western-dominated global capitalism as an oppressive mechanism, with socialism as the means to dismantle it. The public benefits promised by DSA candidates — universal healthcare, tuition-free college, social housing — are merely vehicles for this ideological journey. Programs like Medicare for All and free college are described as "transformative" reforms. These policies aim to weaken the capitalist system, expand government capacity, and pave the way for further transformation.
Third Worldism, which views the West as the greatest source of global evil, provides this domestic revolution with its global meaning. If America is seen as the center of an exploitative Western order, dismantling American capitalism at home and influence abroad become intertwined struggles. The benefits are the entry point, but the ultimate goal is a departure from private ownership, constitutional restraints, and the Western capitalist system.
The DSA's endgame is replacing America’s constitutional structure, abolishing the Senate, subordinating branches of government to Congress, and placing corporations under public ownership. Their aim is the total dismantling of the American way of life. They are a far greater threat than most realize, even among their supporters. If given real power, our nation would become unrecognizable. The question remains: Can they succeed? Can America be subverted from within?
While the DSA can win pockets of power, its path to national dominance is narrow. Its strongest candidates thrive in deep-blue cities and safely Democratic districts, but struggle beyond those enclaves. A Brookings analysis of 282 DSA-endorsed candidates in 2026 revealed less than half won their primaries, with congressional candidates losing 42 races and winning only 19. This reflects an organization capable of capturing municipal offices but not yet capable of assembling a geographically diverse coalition for national governance.
Ironically, socialism remains a formidable electoral ceiling. Gallup found that 57% of Americans view socialism negatively, and only 39% positively. Among independents, only 38% hold a favorable view of socialism compared to 54% for capitalism. While 66% of Democrats view socialism favorably, this strength within the party's progressive base could be a liability when seeking moderate, suburban, or rural voters.
The DSA's strategy of challenging incumbent Democrats creates internal division, consuming resources and forcing moderates to defend against both Republicans and socialist challengers. Centrists like Bill Maher and John Fetterman find more common ground with the traditional right than with the far-left. In races across New York City, Seattle, Michigan, and Wisconsin, DSA candidates barely win, if at all. Unlike the MAGA movement, DSA candidates often split their side, leading many centrist Democrats to join Republicans.
Unless the DSA escapes its urban base, moderates its ideology, and persuades Americans who favor free enterprise, it may influence the Democratic Party but will never command the country. Third Worldist socialism remains at the heart of the DSA. While they pose a threat and can cause misery, we've faced worse. We've survived civil war, Nazi Fascism, Soviet Communism, and we’ll survive this. The American way of life endures beyond anything these radical leftists offer.
