Yesterday, June 10th, Pope Leo celebrated a Solemn Mass at the basilica in Barcelona, blessing its newly completed Tower of Jesus Christ. This tower, soaring over 566 feet, now crowns the tallest basilica in the world, topped with a cross that itself stands five stories tall. The evening ceremony drew an impressive congregation of 9,000 inside, with 120,000 faithful gathered outside, including Spain’s King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
The historical symmetry is breathtaking: the cornerstone of the Sagrada Familia was laid in 1882 during Pope Leo XIII's pontificate, and now, 144 years later, Pope Leo XIV inaugurates its crowning tower. Before Mass, the Pope lit a candle and prayed at the tomb of the church’s designer, Antoni Gaudí, lying in the basilica's crypt. In Orthodox Russia, over 30,000 churches have been rebuilt since the Bolshevik revolution, a testament to the faith’s resilience. Remarkably, since the Soviet Union's collapse on Christmas Day in 1991, the percentage of Russians identifying as Christians has surged from 30% to over 80% today.
This resurgence is not confined to Russia. Look at Saint Sava in Belgrade, Serbia, styled after the Hagia Sophia, and considered a modern wonder of Byzantine architecture, opening in 2020. Similarly, the People's Salvation Cathedral in Bucharest, Romania, opened last year, is the largest and tallest Eastern Orthodox church building worldwide, boasting the largest free-swinging church bell.
As a former educator, I find the renewal of classical and Christian education the most astounding. In Brazil, where there were no classical schools eight years ago, there are now over 50, educating tens of thousands. This brings us back to the Sagrada Familia. Its true marvel lies in its reflection of the future—a concept known as archeo-futurism, coined by French scholar Guillaume Faye.
