In a recent interview, Iger said that Disney from now on will focus on entertainment first, not messages. Iger’s comments about focusing on entertainment rather than on wokeness come on the heels of another Disney disaster. The latest Marvel Universe movie, called The Marvels, is a woke, feminist film. Nobody wanted to see it. It had the worst opening day of any movie in the Marvels franchise. It opened with $47 million, which is peanuts as compared to what it cost to make, a quarter of a billion dollars.
This is the sequel to Captain Marvel, which opened a few years ago with over $150 million, so they lost $100 million this past weekend alone. One movie consulting firm called it ‘an unprecedented Marvel box-office collapse.’ It even performed worse than their previous failure Ant-Man, back in 2015, which just got over $50 million in their opening weekend. Just days after the latest box office flop, it was announced that Disney+ is officially no more.
Disney+ has been a disaster, it has lost billions because they cannot come up with good programming. CEO Bob Iger is telling Disney viewers to ‘prepare.’ They are being forced to combine their streaming service with Hulu, a streaming service co-owned by Disney and Comcast. They are planning on launching a beta-tested combined app with Hulu, with both apps permanently replaced in March of 2024.
Parents are being told to prepare because there are going to be a lot of movies and viewing options that are not consistent with Disney+, and that is because Disney+ is imploding. Elon Musk is going to war with Disney as all of this has been happening. He tweeted that they are the world’s biggest example of go woke, go broke. Their entire upcoming slate is totally unwatchable.
Musk called out Bob Iger by name at the recent New York Times DealBook Summit. He told advertisers like Disney who were pulling their money from Twitter because of the Media Matters fraud that claimed their ads were showing up on neo-Nazi channels, especially Bob Iger, to go eff themselves. X will not be held hostage by money tied to DEI and wokeness. Elon has plenty of money to back that threat up.
Disney’s collapse is a sign that the days of wokeness really are coming to an end. We have to remember that wokeness turns off even people who identify with the political left. We have a number of studies considering woke issues such as BLM, critical race theory, or transgenders in female sports. The results show a split of the left. Half of those on the left are all for the woke issue, but the other half want nothing to do with it.
Wokeness is not a basis for social unity. By its nature it divides, and in an era of consumer politics where more people are voting with their wallets, wokeness is turning out to be box office poison. Woke films provoke boycotting tendencies like nothing else. This is what Disney is suffering from. Elon Musk is absolutely right: the ongoing box office disasters have together made Disney the biggest and most pathetic example of get woke, go broke!
