The exchange was too good to miss: Gallego's response to the question, "Why are you insisting on $1.5 trillion in new spending," was a condescending, "Are you an insurance broker?". Of course, the obvious retort to that is, "No, are you?"—which is precisely what Joe Kernen said. Notice how Gallego responded with the typical Democrat tactic: rules for thee, not for me! He essentially claimed, "No, I'm not, but I don't need to be because I understand, you don’t." This is what’s called 'special pleading,' a logical fallacy that involves applying a lenient standard to oneself while holding others to a stricter standard. It is pure bunk!
But why are they attempting to extort $1.5 trillion from the American taxpayer? This is a ransom list so bloated with far-left priorities that it requires a spreadsheet to track. Their demands include permanently extending Obamacare subsidies, repealing fiscally responsible Medicaid reforms, and allocating nearly $200 billion over ten years for healthcare benefits for illegal immigrants. Republicans have repeatedly offered clean funding extensions that could reopen the government within hours—the very same Continuing Resolution (CR) that Democrats have signed on to numerous times in the past. Yet, Democrats are now refusing to do so, choosing instead to double down on their partisan wish list over military families lining up at food banks and Americans unable to close on homes. This isn't negotiations; it's hostage-taking. There are no counter-demands. In every other shutdown, one side has its demands, and the other side has its demands. Republicans have no demands; they literally have nothing to negotiate. They simply want to fund the government at current levels. That’s what is meant by a Clean CR! The Democrats are making all the demands in a feeble attempt at firing up their deflated and demoralized base! That’s why they’re pushing this $1.5 trillion extortion that they’re never going to get! Here is what then-Representative Ruben Gallego said at the time about the 35-day government shutdown from December 2018 to January 2019: he viciously attacked Republicans, saying, "Donald Trump’s refusal to end his irresponsible shutdown is causing thousands of Arizonans and people across the country to suffer while they are furloughed or work without pay. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senator Martha McSally, and the rest of the Senate GOP need to do their jobs and open the government before families suffer long-term consequences". Fast forward to today, and you have a very different Ruben Gallego, do you not? In 2019, he condemned the shutdown in the harshest of terms, and now, in 2025, he is the biggest cheerleader on the planet for the very same shutdown! This takes the insurance broker hypocrisy to a whole new level! Gallego has now voted 12 times against reopening the government and is reportedly accepting his taxpayer-funded paycheck while his own staff goes unpaid. Rules for thee, not for me!
We’re finished! We’re done! Again, Kernen is absolutely right there; there’s nothing for Republicans to negotiate. They have no demands. In past shutdowns, one side had its demands, and the other side had its demands. Eventually, the side that held out for their demands to be met generally gets blamed for the shutdown; they see their poll numbers starting to tank, and they give in, and the other side gets its demands. Here, you have the Democrats demanding $1.5 trillion in new spending, which, by the way, they’ve already begun to cede on, openly backing off of that. Senator Chris Murphy just said they’d be happy with $20 billion! [laugh] You can’t make this stuff up! If you ever wanted proof that they know they’re losing this, it’s right there, and you even heard this hyper hypocrite Gallego say that he just wanted some healthcare funding, and that’s it. He's turning his back on the $1.5 trillion demand as well, but regardless, the asymmetry of this whole situation is still the same. Even if they held out for just 20 bucks, there would be nothing for the Republicans to negotiate; they are not making a single demand. They’re simply putting forward the very same clean CR that Democrats have voted for repeatedly in the past; no additives, no pork add-ons, just a clean Continuing Resolution.
