This narrative ignores historical context and refuses to question whether racism is as pervasive today as in the past. The left's reaction, which insists on race-based districting, is a power move rooted in a decontextualized worldview. If society is perpetually racist, then, according to this narrative, Black voters must define racial identity in redistricting. Sellers' argument suggests that the remedy to past racial injustice is more racial classification—a logic echoing segregationist practices he claims to oppose.
Justice Clarence Thomas, himself Black, has long argued for a colorblind Constitution. The government sorting citizens by race, even with good intentions, revives the machinery of past injustices. Sellers' stance inadvertently indicts the Democratic Party. He claims Black Americans in 2026 face the same conditions as in 1896, despite decades of overwhelming Democratic support. If nothing has improved, then the Democrats, who have enjoyed near-monopolistic Black political loyalty, have failed their constituents. Sellers unintentionally delivered a scathing critique of his own party on live television—and was oblivious to it.
