Reality, as it tends to do, will ultimately prevail.
As for the Senate, the path for the SAVE America Act is fraught with challenges. The standard legislative process would require 60 votes to overcome a filibuster, necessitating support from at least seven Democrats—a far-fetched scenario. However, the bill's 85 percent public support might pressure vulnerable Democrats facing 2024 reelection. Alternatively, Republicans could consider the "nuclear option" of eliminating the filibuster, although internal opposition from senators like Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski complicates this route.
Another possibility is bypassing the filibuster through reconciliation, allowing passage with a simple majority if the bill is tied to federal spending or revenue. Republicans could argue that maintaining voter rolls and citizenship databases impacts the budget, potentially including SAVE Act provisions in a larger reconciliation package. With a major reconciliation bill for Trump's broader agenda already in the works, this might be the most feasible path.
