Yet, when President Trump was re-elected in 2025, Arc decided America was too perilous for transgender individuals. In a dramatic protest against Trump, Arc left the U.S. for the Netherlands, seeking asylum due to alleged harassment and a frightening encounter with a driver back home. Arc’s destination was tehr AH-pul, the Netherlands' main asylum registration center, a place expected to offer sanctuary and tolerance. However, instead of safety, Arc found a center filled with asylum seekers from Syria, Eritrea, Somalia, Turkey, Algeria, and Morocco. And the welcome was anything but warm.
What a twist of irony: fleeing the land of so-called "transphobia," from none other than San Francisco, only to end up seeking refuge from those whom the open-borders advocates suggest we embrace without question. You simply cannot make this stuff up! Arc even took to the internet, describing the Netherlands as "dire" and expressing fear for their life. Here was someone so profoundly anti-Trump that they fled the U.S. out of fear of Trump voters, only to find themselves among asylum seekers with no regard for Western values—values that Trump supporters don’t just affirm, but champion! This is a narrative you couldn't concoct even if you tried.
And this wasn't just Arc's imagination running wild. By July, Dutch authorities had labeled the area around tehr AH-pul a "safety-risk zone" after violence erupted there. The country's asylum and migration minister had to address parliament, calling for preventive searches, extra security cameras, additional guards, and special enforcement officers to maintain basic order. It became so perilous that the Red Cross and a refugee aid group suspended operations, unable to guarantee the safety of their staff. Consider that for a moment: the Red Cross, accustomed to war zones, withdrew from a European refugee camp because it was too dangerous.
Now, here's where the story turns almost poetic. The very individuals fleeing an allegedly intolerant, phobic America have inadvertently become the best advertisements for how accepting and indeed safe America truly is. After months of living in fear at tehr AH-pul and a rejected asylum application, Arc returned to California last month, admitting in the British Guardian: "This is the dumbest thing I've ever done." Fleeing a nation over a non-existent danger only to stumble into real danger elsewhere is, indeed, quite foolish.
This saga highlights the clash between ideologically-tainted perception and objective reality. As of this year, 67 United Nations member states criminalize consensual same-sex relations entirely. Seven impose the death penalty, and five more have legal ambiguity regarding executions. At least 63 member states restrict free expression related to sexual and gender identity. While Arc pretended America was too dangerous for a transgender person, scores of countries still execute people simply for being gay. America doesn't do that. It doesn’t throw people off rooftops or sentence them to death for their love.
Yes, President Trump altered federal transgender policy. His administration recognizes two sexes for federal purposes, issues passports based on birth sex, and military policy disqualifies most with gender dysphoria unless granted a waiver. Americans can absolutely disagree with these policies. They can vote against them, challenge them in court, protest, and criticize the president—this is called freedom. Arc exercised this freedom, left the country, and returned to continue critiquing. Try doing that in the 67 countries where Arc’s identity is a crime.
This is what happens when political hysteria supplants basic reality. The grass appeared greener across the Atlantic. Arc crossed the ocean and learned the hard way that it wasn't. America can frustrate you, disappoint you, and elect a president you can't stand, but it remains a country you can come home to—or better yet, never leave in the first place.
