Texas Fights Back Against Unlawful University Scheme

In Richardson, Texas, a quiet suburb north of Dallas, an intriguing and controversial event unfolded. A so-called university opened its doors, offering degrees in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, and Cybersecurity, all blended with mandatory Islamic studies. They began recruiting students internationally, even offering a pathway for students from Pakistan to enroll without a U.S. visa. However, they did all this without seeking permission from the state of Texas, and the Lone Star State was not amused.

- A new university in Texas offered degrees with mandatory Islamic studies, without state authorization.
- Governor Greg Abbott and Texas A&M University issued cease-and-desist orders against the institution.
- The incident highlights the rise of civilizational populism, emphasizing borders, culture, and heritage.

Meet the Texas American Muslim Institute of Technology at Dallas, or as they prefer, "TexAM University." Notice anything? The name bears a striking resemblance to Texas A&M, a fact we’ll revisit. TexAM operated out of a building that also houses the Dallas Diyanet Mosque and the Islamic Seminary of America — not exactly a sprawling independent campus. Their website proclaimed TexAM as the first U.S. university to offer STEM degrees with compulsory Islamic studies, marketed aggressively to students. Yet, the real kicker was their initiative allowing Pakistani students to earn degrees sans U.S. student visas. A Texas-based 'university,' unaccredited and unauthorized, was offering degrees abroad without a visa requirement. Unsurprisingly, Texas officials swiftly intervened.

On May 7th, Governor Greg Abbott instructed the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to issue a cease-and-desist order against TexAM. Abbott took to social media, emphasizing Texas's unwillingness to tolerate illegal educational operations. The order was comprehensive: TexAM was prohibited from granting degrees, using the term "university," and advertising degree programs. They had until May 8th to cease all operations or face legal consequences. Texas's message was clear and unyielding: cease operations or face prosecution.

But the saga didn’t end there. The following day, Texas A&M University delivered its own cease-and-desist letter. Texas A&M Chancellor Glenn Hegar underscored the need to protect their name and trademarks from confusion and misuse. The combined legal pressure from Texas and Texas A&M was overwhelming, and TexAM folded rapidly. Their website went offline almost immediately.

Adding a political twist, the Mayor of Richardson, Amir Omar — the first Muslim elected in North Texas — publicly endorsed the TexAM project. While Mayor Omar can support any initiative, backing an unaccredited institution operating outside state law raises questions, especially one recruiting overseas with a no-visa program from Pakistan. Richardson, part of the "Muslim belt" of Dallas, faces scrutiny when local leaders support religiously-affiliated institutions that flout state laws.

This isn’t the first such incident. In Josephine, Texas, a radical Islamic group attempted to build a self-contained society with a mosque, Islamic school, medical clinic, and homes exclusively for Muslims. Dubbed EPIC City, the project met a swift end thanks to coordinated efforts by Governor Abbott, Attorney General Paxton, and other state agencies. Texans responded by voting overwhelmingly to ban Sharia law in state courts, a ban promptly enacted by Governor Abbott.

What’s unfolding is a cultural phenomenon known as civilizational populism, reshaping Western democracy in profound ways. This isn’t merely a culture war over policy differences; it’s a deeper civilizational reckoning. Western citizens are awakening to the need to defend their way of life, history, faith, and identity. Civilizational populism asserts that borders, culture, and heritage matter. When institutions deviate from the civilizations that built them, people have not just the right but the duty to reclaim them.

This movement is no longer fringe. It governs, legislates, reshapes courts, and defends borders. It is civilizational populism in action, and its advocates are steadfast. Remember, don’t mess with Texas.
