The average fan of Star Wars is a somewhat wealthy, nerdy, middle-aged male. Statistics show that the recent Star Wars films were primarily viewed by males, and most of the males were adults. Even though the customer base for Star Wars seems to be hard-working men, the director of the next Star Wars film says that she loves to make men uncomfortable.

The majority of fans of the Star Wars franchise are overwhelmingly male, so this marketing strategy is likely to not help the company in any way. World of Reel observes that this director is creating a PR crisis for Lucasfilm and Disney, which has already lost billions of dollars as a result of including DEI propaganda in their movies. They also state that “Obaid-Chinoy’s background is in feminist non-fiction filmmaking.” This indicates that she is likely not qualified to make a Star Wars film based on her experience and that she will incorporate this style and worldview into the new film.
It is confusing that Disney would choose a radical director when they are already under fire for their woke productions. The recent Star Wars films did not do well in contrast to their potential and the past success of the series. Since the majority of the Star Wars fan base is male, Obaid-Chinoy’s incendiary comments are turning away the series’ fanbase and the families that would go see this film.
Additionally, this director has not learned from the mistakes of other franchises that betrayed their fanbase. Many filmmakers took original books or movies and created new woke movies or just terrible films that do not appropriately reflect the original storylines. One example of this is the Harry Potter series. The fanbase of Harry Potter is global and diverse, reflecting the series’ appeal to many different people with different lifestyles and experiences.
The Harry Potter series had a ‘prequel’ spinoff, the ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ series. There were supposed to be 5 films in this new series, but they were so unpopular with the fans that they stopped after 3 with no resolution to the story. The movie made one of the beloved characters of the original series gay, and the third film included several references to him being in love with a man. Many fans found the rejection of the original storyline unacceptable, and since the movie was so focused on including homosexuality, there was no other plot to draw people to the movie. It turns out that turning a beloved character gay is not enough to cause audiences to continue supporting the series, so the films stopped and the story will not be completed.
The majority of recent Disney movies are also examples of woke films bombing at the box office. Audiences nationwide are tired of stories with no good plot that only serve to peddle liberal ideology. When people go to see a new Disney movie, they want to see something with a compelling story. A story is composed of 5 key elements: plot, setting, characters, point of view, and conflict. When Disney keeps recycling the same story elements that are not even interesting to audiences such as Critical Race Theory, Feminist propaganda, and the rejection of normal behavior, relationships, and tradition, audiences will have no desire to see films with repeatedly terrible stories.
Disney is not learning from the mistakes of its past several movies with wokeness and DEI as the main story points which all flopped and lost them hundreds of millions of dollars. Additionally, the new Star Wars director has not learned from the example of another successful franchise with a large fan base, Harry Potter, and the abysmal failure that their progressive movie was for the spinoff series. Just like with Harry Potter, the films can only rely on the original series for so much support. New filmmakers seeking to continue the ideas of beloved series must create truly good stories for the new films to be successful.
Disney CEO Bob Iger claimed that he wants Disney to focus on stories rather than ‘messaging’ in their upcoming films in recognition of the backlash woke movies receive. Additionally, Disney recently changed the direction that their new live-action Snow White film was heading after backlash from conservatives. Iger released this statement and Snow White is set to release later due to likely changes to the plot to remove propaganda and revise the storyline. Hopefully, following conservative backlash, Star Wars will also follow the new direction that Disney’s CEO has outlined and focus on creating a good story rather than messaging.
