Notably, 55 percent of left-leaning respondents felt that assassinating Trump could be justified, unveiling a grim reality of our current political landscape.
The issue of political violence was further highlighted by contrasting media narratives around protests during the COVID-19 pandemic. While anti-lockdown protests were vilified as reckless and dangerous, the media shielded Black Lives Matter protests from the same scrutiny, depicting them instead as noble responses to societal injustices. Such behavior illustrates a dangerous double standard. When the left protests, it's seen as a moral imperative. When the right does, it’s branded as a threat to democracy.
This ideological framing can largely be traced back to the triumph of liberalism. Emerging from the 18th century, liberalism sought to liberate people from the oppressive moral frameworks of prior eras. Over time, this movement evolved into wokeness, characterized by an intolerance for dissent and a prioritization of an emancipatory narrative that demonizes opposition. Cancel culture naturally followed, culminating in the extreme form of political violence seen today.
In essence, the left has embraced a secular moral system that permits violence as a means of excommunication in the face of dissent. Liberalism’s decay is palpable; rather than adapting to modern realities, it seems to be skewed toward increasingly desperate and violent measures to retain its ideological dominance. One can only hope that this trajectory does not lead further down a path marked by violence and chaos as liberalism’s influence wanes.
