EU's Liberal Dreams Crumble—Populism Strikes Back

The European Union and its globalist allies have been left looking utterly foolish. In a stunning turn of events, the bureaucrats in Brussels have been outmaneuvered not once, but twice in a single week, leaving them scrambling to understand how their supposed victories dissolved before their eyes. They believed the era of Viktor Orbán, the Hungarian leader who has been a thorn in their side for nearly two decades, had come to an end. The liberal media celebrated, proclaiming, "The Era of Orbán Is Over." But within just 48 hours, their celebration turned to shock as Péter Magyar, the man they hailed as Hungary’s liberal savior, revealed himself to be more Orbánish than Orbán himself. And if that wasn’t enough, Bulgaria added to the EU's woes by delivering a second blow.

- Viktor Orbán’s defeat was supposed to mark the end of populism in Central Europe, but the new Hungarian leader, Péter Magyar, has proven even more conservative.
- Bulgaria's elections handed another defeat to the EU, as a nationalist-populist party led by former President Rumen Radev claimed victory.
- The EU’s vision of a liberal, pro-Brussels Europe is unraveling, with Hungary and Bulgaria leading a populist realignment.

On April 12th, Viktor Orbán’s 16-year tenure as Prime Minister of Hungary came to a close. Péter Magyar’s Tisza party achieved a staggering 138 seats out of 199—a constitutional supermajority—on a record-breaking 80% turnout, the highest in Hungary's post-communist history. Orbán’s Fidesz Party was reduced to 55 seats, while the far-right Our Homeland secured six. Remarkably, the Hungarian political left failed to secure a single seat in parliament. Yes, you heard that right—the supposed "great liberal restoration" of Hungary saw the literal political left fail to even enter parliament.

Despite the media's narrative of a "pro-EU liberal uprising," the reality is starkly different. Hungarians replaced a right-wing populist with another right-wing populist. Péter Magyar campaigned as Orbán without the corruption, running to the right of Orbán on immigration and EU policies. He promised to shut down a generous guest worker program, maintain the border fence, oppose mandatory EU migration quotas, and resist Ukraine's accelerated EU accession. Magyar's party, Tisza, is a conservative, populist, center-right party. BBC and Deutsche Welle, among others, confirm this. Even the New York Times conceded Magyar is a conservative previously allied with Orbán. The truth Brussels fears to admit is that Hungary didn’t swing left; it just swapped conservatives. Orbán lost, but Orbánism—the framework of Central European sovereignty—won in a landslide.

In a move that epitomizes 5D chess, Magyar is calling for Viktor Orbán to run for President of the European Commission, currently held by Ursula von der Leyen. Whether Orbán can win is irrelevant; it shows Magyar’s commitment to extending Orbánism throughout the EU. Hungary has moved even further to the right, leaving the EU looking utterly foolish. The political left is clinically dead in Hungary, and the situation worsens for globalists as Bulgaria delivers another shock.

On April 19th, Bulgaria held its eighth snap election in five years, a testament to the chaos EU-style liberal governance has wrought. The Bulgarian people declared "enough," with former President Rumen Radev, a Euro-skeptic and nationalist, leading his new party to a landslide victory. His party secured at least 135 seats out of 240, an outright parliamentary majority, pulling 44.6% of the vote. The establishment parties crumbled—GERB lost half its support, the Turkish-minority DPS had its weakest result since 1994, and the Bulgarian Socialist Party failed to enter parliament for the first time since its founding.

Radev, a former fighter pilot and outspoken opponent of sending weapons to Ukraine, campaigned against corruption, the cost of living crisis, mass migration, and endless war subsidies, advocating for sovereign, stable governance. This isn’t a pro-Russian script; it’s a nationalist-populist realignment against the failed liberal globalist establishment. It's a civilizational populist script that just won an outright majority in an EU member state. In a humorous moment from his past, Radev once introduced himself to an unknowing Brazilian tourist as the president of Bulgaria, demonstrating his down-to-earth nature.

In just eight days, the European Union has suffered two significant defeats: the Hungarian left has been annihilated, and the Bulgarian socialists are out of parliament for the first time since their inception. The pro-EU coalition in Bulgaria has been crushed, and GERB, the last reliable pro-Brussels vehicle in Sofia, has been halved. In their place rises a conservative supermajority in Budapest, even more hardline on borders than Orbán, and a nationalist-populist majority in Sofia, openly skeptical of Ukraine funding and EU overreach.

The globalists thought they were winning, that Orbán’s defeat signaled the end of Central European populism. Instead, they’ve been made to look like total fools because the populist realignment isn’t about one Hungarian strongman. It’s a civilizational current sweeping through every post-communist nation in Europe, fueled by voters tired of being lectured, taxed, and inundated with so-called refugees. Orbán may have lost, but Orbánism is just beginning!
