Boycott Backfires—Starbucks Thrives Amid Chaos

In a rather audacious move, New York City’s incoming socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, is urging New Yorkers to boycott Starbucks, a company crucial to the city's economic framework. This call to arms comes amid a broader labor dispute that has captured national attention. But in a twist of irony, Starbucks might just be the unintended beneficiary of Mamdani's bold stance.

- Zohran Mamdani, NYC’s mayor-elect, called for a Starbucks boycott during a union strike.
- Starbucks countered the boycott by reporting record-breaking sales on its Red Cup Day.
- Mamdani's economic plans rely heavily on corporate taxes, which makes his boycott stance paradoxical.

On November 13th, Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old democratic socialist poised to take office on January 1st, publicly endorsed a boycott against Starbucks. This was in solidarity with union workers participating in the "Red Cup Rebellion" strike. Mamdani tweeted, "While workers are on strike, I won't be buying any Starbucks, and I'm asking you to join us. Together, we can send a powerful message: No contract, no coffee." The Starbucks Workers United, a union representing a mere 4% of Starbucks stores, orchestrated this strike on Starbucks' busiest day—the start of its holiday season—to demand higher wages, better schedules, improved healthcare, and stronger job protections.

The irony here is palpable. Mamdani's entire economic blueprint for New York City relies heavily on corporate taxes, including those from Starbucks, to fund his ambitious socialist programs such as free childcare and fare-free public transportation. Yet, here he is, advocating for an economic strangulation of a vital revenue source.

If Starbucks were to retreat from New York City, a very real possibility given their nationwide closures, the financial repercussions would be devastating. The city would face a loss of $70 to $80 million annually in direct revenue from sales tax, payroll tax, and other fees. The broader economic impact could reach a staggering quarter of a billion dollars once indirect effects like decreased foot traffic and declining property values are factored in.

Starbucks, for its part, is navigating through a challenging period. The company has shuttered over 600 locations nationwide, including more than 50 in New York alone, as part of a billion-dollar restructuring strategy. Yet, despite these setbacks, Starbucks reported that 99% of its stores remained open during the strike, achieving their best-ever sales on Red Cup Day. The company seems to be indicating that while New York City, and specifically Mamdani, might need Starbucks, the reverse isn't true.

Adding to Mamdani’s woes is the shrinking NYPD force, which is seeing a mass exodus partly due to Mamdani’s perceived anti-police stance. The NYPD has lost over 5,000 officers since January 2024, with departures accelerating as Mamdani's inauguration approaches.

In the face of these challenges, Starbucks appears to be enjoying the last laugh. The so-called "Mamdani effect" has even led to increased real estate deals in places like Miami, as nervous New Yorkers look to relocate. Starbucks, by thriving amidst the boycott, sends a subtle message: they are an international powerhouse that can easily shift focus to more welcoming markets if necessary.

Mamdani is faced with a choice: continue down a path that risks economic destabilization or recognize the critical role of corporations like Starbucks in sustaining his policy goals. Given the track record of those who double down on ideological rhetoric, it's likely New Yorkers will bear the brunt—one closed storefront at a time. What do you think?
