Representative Thomas Massie introduced a bill many years ago to abolish the Department of Education. Now, Trump has declared that his campaign will push to end this Department if elected.
🧵 Last night Trump endorsed the idea of eliminating the Department of Education!
On February 7th, 2017, the US Senate confirmed Betsy DeVos as Trump’s Secretary of Education.
Purposefully, on that same day, I introduced HR 899, a bill to terminate the Department of Education. pic.twitter.com/57x3jeWkkS

Massie has stated that the push to end the Department of Education began with Ronald Reagan who argued in favor of eliminating this Department but did not end up doing it. Massie introduced a bill aiming to bring back this elimination for consideration despite the left being completely opposed and the notion seeming radical now.
🧵 In closing, creation of the US Department of Education was a failed re-election ploy of Jimmy Carter,
but now we are stuck with what amounts to a national school board composed of 4,000 bureaucrats.
Let’s empower teachers and parents by passing HR 899 to End the Dept of Ed.!

Massie wants to take the power of determining how our country’s schools should operate away from the bureaucrats in the Department of Education and put it into the hands of the state and local governments. This seems like a great idea as it would allow red states to clean up their public schools and avoid all of the progressive nonsense polluting our current school system. Many leftwing outlets and pundits have tried to paint the call to take power away from the Department of Education as attempts to completely shut down the public school system. However, that is not what this legislation aims to do.
Calm down Karens…
Shutting down the Department of Education doesn’t abolish public education.
It doesn’t even abolish government schools.
It just returns the control of public schools to States.
If you don’t think your State will do well with this… support school choice.

The Department of Education has failed our country and the students and families that have received subpar education and services from public schools under their administration. Despite having a budget of over 220 billion dollars a year, it is estimated based on a survey of public school teachers that 44% of students are behind in at least one subject. Abolishing the system that has gotten our country into this disastrous position is a great start as states will be able to operate schools according to their own leaders who were elected by the parents who will be sending their children to these schools.
