A political earthquake is rocking the nation of Germany! The so-called far right has risen to power and prominence not seen in decades. What’s taking so many by surprise is that we have the youngest voters to thank. Over the weekend in Germany’s latest elections, we are seeing an astonishing trend among young voters who are turning to the populist right like never before.
– The AfD’s victory in Thuringia marks the first time a “far-right” party won an election in post-war Germany,
– The AfD’s rise reflects widespread discontent with issues like immigration, economic instability, and “green-flation,” which have eroded the popularity of traditional parties, especially the Green Party, among young voters.
– This shift to the right in Germany mirrors global trends as countries increasingly turn towards nationalist and populist movements.
A political earthquake rocked the continent of Europe over the weekend. Voters in the East German state of Thuringia went to the polls over the weekend and delivered a stunning victory for the nationalist populist party, the Alternative for Deutschland. This was a stunning result. The AfD got 34% of the vote in Thuringia, and they came in a very close second in neighboring Saxony.
These two elections over the weekend show the nationalist right surging in East Germany. This was the first time the ‘far right’ won an election in Germany in the post war era. The AfD exploded onto the scene with 13% of the vote in their very first national election. 7 years later in these regional elections, the AfD has now risen to the most popular party in East Germany.
AfD leader Alice Weidel articulated in no uncertain terms the AfD’s position on immigration:

Alice Weidel promised that, if given power, the AfD would completely shut down Germany’s borders and begin a mass deportation program in order to restore the integrity of Germany’s historic traditional culture. The ones who are really driving this mass turn to the right among east Germans are young people.

This graph shows that the German Gen Z are supporting the AfD 2 to 1 over the next most popular party. The AfD is getting more than double the support of any other party in Eastern Germany among voters under 30. Gen Z, which are those born between 1995 and 2012, have experienced constant crises in their conscious life. They have seen the global financial crisis of 2008, the debt crisis and the austerity measures that were enacted particularly among the Mediterranean nations, the massive migration crisis of 2015, the pandemic, and now of full-blown war in Europe.
The economy has been a mess in Europe, made all the worse by the Green Parties and the green-flation that they’ve ushered in with all of their environmental measures. Young voters decimated the Green Party in the parliamentary elections back in June, voting overwhelmingly for the far right. Buying power has significantly declined in the last seven years as we have seen an increase in fuel costs and the implementation of various taxes have all had a horrific effect on daily life, which young voters are particularly feeling.
There is currently very little optimism among young voters. They don’t see the future as something promising and flourishing. Young people are very concerned about unfettered immigration. Older voters remain very concerned and resistant towards a new right wing particularly in Germany, young voters aren’t as hesitant.
This election in East Germany is obviously a disaster for the national government in Berlin. Germany is currently governed by a center left coalition headed by Olaf Scholz. The tension within this coalition is that the free Democratic Party has been getting battered in the polls over the last couple of years. They have lost one state and local election after another since 2022.
There is tremendous pressure, particularly among the members of the Free Democratic Party, to walk away from the coalition and force early elections. However, as things stand, the coalition will stay together, since power is very hard to give up once you’ve got it. The next national election in Germany is just a year away, in September 2025, and polls show that the center left is going to get absolutely crushed.
In many respects, it looks like Germany’s election will be the mirror opposite of the UK’s recent election where the center right Tories got wiped out of power because they became so unpopular. Germany is yet the latest nation around the world to turn forcefully and deliberately to the political right, and given the worldwide trends that we see every day, they most certainly will not be the last!
